Trane Technologies has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cancoil Thermal Corporation, a privately held North American maker of heat-transfer products, according to a deal record published on 21 October and reporting by ACHR News on 23 October. The price has not been disclosed, and the deal is expected to close before the end of 2026.
Who Cancoil is
Cancoil was founded in 1983 by Chander and Anju Datta and is based in Ontario, Canada. It makes fluid coolers, air-cooled condensers and custom finned-tube coils, which go into data centres, food processing plants, refrigerated warehouses, supermarkets, schools and hospitals.
The business has manufacturing sites in Ontario and US operations in Jacksonville, Texas, and employs more than 450 people. Importantly, it is not new to Trane: Cancoil already supplies components to Trane's chiller and airside businesses, so this is a buyer bringing part of its own supply chain under its control.
"Cancoil adds a critical capability at the right time for our business and our customers," Donny Simmons, COO, Trane
The pattern behind the deal
This is not Trane's first move of this kind in 2026. In February it agreed to buy LiquidStack, a Texas-based maker of liquid cooling systems for data centres, which joined the commercial HVAC unit of its Americas business. Cancoil is a smaller, less visible deal, but the logic is similar: secure the thermal products that data centre and large commercial projects depend on.
The same week, Carrier said it would spend more than $600m on a new chiller plant in Fort Worth, citing record backlog. Taken together, the two biggest US-headquartered HVAC manufacturers are both investing in capacity and supply security at the same time.
Why it matters to contractors
For mechanical contractors, coils, condensers and fluid coolers are the parts that turn up late and push schedules. Equipment makers owning more of their supply chain could, over time, mean more reliable lead times on large jobs. It may also mean fewer independent component suppliers for contractors to buy from directly, which purchasing teams will want to watch.
The deal also shows where the big manufacturers think demand is heading. Cancoil's customer list spans data centres, healthcare and education, the same sectors filling mechanical contractors' backlogs this year.
What it means for hiring
- We see equipment makers integrating suppliers as a sign that thermal engineering talent (coil design, heat-transfer and applications engineers) is becoming strategic, not just a supply-chain line item.
- Contractors that rely on custom coils and fluid coolers may want stronger procurement and project-controls people who can manage lead times as the supplier base consolidates.
- In our view, integration work after deals like this often creates demand for operations and plant leadership roles, particularly at cross-border sites like Ontario and Texas.
