Hologic has agreed to buy Reveal Genomics, the Barcelona company behind the HER2DX breast cancer test. The US group announced the definitive agreement on 20 October and has not disclosed what it is paying.
What Reveal brings
Reveal was founded in 2020 as a spin-out from three Barcelona institutions: IDIBAPS/Clínic Barcelona, the University of Barcelona and the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology, Catalan newspaper Ara reports. It has 19 employees, and its co-founders are Patricia Villagrasa, who is CEO, Aleix Prat, Joel Parker and Ana Vivancos.
Its lead product, HER2DX, is a genomic test designed to help doctors choose the best therapy for people with HER2-positive breast cancer. Behind it, Reveal combines lab techniques with computer applications and machine learning to surface new data from cancer research.
Funding has been modest by US standards. Ara says the company received €335,000 of public money through Spain's Neotec programme, with further investment from Catalan individuals and family offices.
Why Hologic wants it
Hologic already sells the Breast Cancer Index, a guideline-recognised genomic assay used when deciding whether women with HR+ early-stage breast cancer should continue endocrine therapy for longer. HER2DX covers a different subtype, and Hologic expects the pairing to widen the group of breast cancer patients whose care its tests can guide.
"Reveal Genomics’ portfolio is a strong strategic complement to our existing oncology offering within Diagnostic Solutions" Vitor Rocha, CEO, Diagnostic Solutions, Hologic
For Reveal, the attraction is reach.
"Joining Hologic gives us the scale and capabilities to accelerate that mission and reach many more patients worldwide." Patricia Villagrasa-Gonzalez, CEO and co-founder, Reveal Genomics
The numbers
The size gap is stark. Hologic closed fiscal 2025 with revenue of $4.1 billion and has more than 7,000 staff, according to Ara. Completion still depends on Spanish regulatory approval and other usual closing conditions. The release also flags integration and reimbursement among the risks to the deal's value.
The bigger picture
Developers of single, high-value oncology tests often hit the same wall: the science is proven but building a US sales force, market access team and payer case from scratch is slow and expensive. Selling to a group that already has those teams is one well-trodden answer. Hologic's move also shows that large diagnostics companies are still willing to buy specialist genomic assays to fill gaps in a franchise, even when the target is tiny.
What it means for hiring
- Integration is where the hiring happens. Expect demand for oncology market access, reimbursement and medical affairs people who can take an acquired assay through an existing channel.
- A specialist test joining a broad portfolio needs sales reps and MSLs who can explain genomic risk scores to breast oncologists, not just sell volume.
- For small diagnostics companies weighing their own options, a commercial leader with a track record of building payer evidence makes the business more valuable to any future buyer.
